A late eighteenth/early nineteenth century Persian or Indian horseman's battle axe (tabar), he head decorated in gold damascene (some minor corrosion), with a pointed octagonal retaining nut above a gilded floral ring, the hard wood haft with six retaining pins each with a silver flower head with a gilded strap running three quarters of the haft adding stability to the axe 20ins long (51cm)

Note on the artist: Born near Glasgow into an impoverished though artistic family. Began painting at the Glasgow Institute during the 1860s. A trip to Islay and Jura with James Docharty in 1872 determined McEwan to turn to art as a profession and he subsequently spent the following years painting a large number of genre and historical works. President of the Glasgow Art Club.
